Learning outcomes At the end of the curricular unit, the student should be able to:
1 - Understand and apply statistical methods in the analysis of the different types of data.
2 - Use the program SPSS in the statistical analysis of data.
3 - Produce and organize the results of a statistical analysis of data.
4 - Analyze and criticize studies and/ or articles in the textile engineering area that satisfy the learning outcomes.
5- Identify the probabilistic models, their properties, and their applications to textile engineering.
Syllabus Chapter I) Descriptive Statistics
-Population/sample;
-Variable Classification and measure scales.
-Creation of databases in SPSS;
- Frequency tables of unidimensional/ bidimensional variables;
-Graphic representations;
- Measures of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, and kurtosis;
Chapter II) Correlation and Simple Linear Regression
- Pearson Correlation coefficient;
-Scatter Plot;
-Linear Regression;
Chapter III) Probabilities theory;
--random experiments, sample spaces, events;
--Axiomatic definition of Probability and respective properties;
--conditional probability;
-Random variables (discrete/continuous);
- distribution function and probability function (probability density function);
-Expected value and variance of a random variable;
-Binomial distribution;
-Poisson distribution;
-Normal distribution.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria In the theoretical classes, the program content will be presented. The practical classes will be taught in computer labs to learn SPSS using various databases.

As for assessment, it is proposed that students complete 4 short tests (worth 4 points each) and one practical assignment (worth 4 points), consisting of a written component and a presentation. All assessment activities will be carried out in SPSS. The practical assignment is composed of two components: the written component (1.5 points) and the classroom presentation (2.5 points).

The exam grade is calculated as follows:
CE = 0.8 TE + 0.2 TP
where CE = exam grade; TE = SPSS test; TP = practical assignment.

Exemption from the final exam is granted when the final EA grade is equal to or higher than 9.5 points and attendance is above 40%.

The FREQUENCY grade is granted to students when the EA grade is 6 or higher but lower than 9.5 points.
