Learning outcomes This UC is intended to provide students with a set of basic knowledge in the area of Biochemistry that will enable them to understand the molecular logic of life.
understand the molecular logic of life.
At the end of the course unit the learner is expected to be able to: -Identify the general principles and terminology of Biochemistry
-Identify the general principles and terminology of Biochemistry;
-Recognize and describe the structure and properties of biomolecules;
-Relate the structure and properties of biomolecules with their biological function;
-Identify and describe the basic principles of enzymology and enzymatic mechanisms;
-Apply the knowledge acquired in the interpretation and resolution of problems in the field of Biochemistry;
-Perform experimental techniques in the field of Biochemistry and analyze and interpret the results with scientific rigor and critical thinking.
Syllabus 1 INTRODUCTION TO BIOCHEMISTRY. Origin of biomolecules. The water molecule (properties and buffer solutions).
2 PROTEINS. Structure and properties of amino acids. Stereochemistry and acid-basic properties. Hierarchy and structural classification
structural classification of proteins. Relationship between structure and function. Allosteric proteins: hemoglobin. Purification and characterization of proteins.
Properties of enzymes.
3-GLYCIDS. Structure and general properties. Stereoisomerism, mutarotation and anomeric forms.
4. LIPIDS. Classification, structure/properties.
5. NUCLEIC ACIDS. Structure, properties/function.
6. VITAMINS AND COENZYMES. Characteristics of water soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Structure and biological function of vitamins. Coenzyme forms.
7-PRACTICAL PROGRAM
Preparation of buffer solutions
Potentiometric titration of amino acids
Determination of protein concentration by Bradford Method
Study of the kinetics of sucrose hydrolysis by the enzyme invertase.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theoretical (T) and theoretical-practical (TP) classes of a dynamic nature. Practical classes involve experimental work related to T concepts.
A. Teaching Learning Classification (CEA):
Final grade (NF) = 70% T final grade (NFT) + 30% Practical grade (NP)
-The minimum CEA to pass the UC: 9.5 values.
-This final grade formula is applied to frequencies and exams.
-The exam grade is considered a T grade.
-The minimum CEA for admission to the exam: Approval of the practical component (minimum grade of 9.5).
A1-A Theoretical Assessment (70% of NF): completion of 3 tests with a minimum average final grade of 9.5 to pass this component:
1st test 30%+ 2nd test 35%+3rd test 35%

A.2-A Practical Assessment
30% of NP = 50% x MT1 + 50% x MT2
MT1 and MT2= Minitests 1 and 2
TTP – Theoretical-practical recovery test.
