Learning outcomes This course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge about the main thermodynamic cycles used in engineering. Steam power cycles and gas turbine cycles will be covered, with an emphasis on their efficiency and practical applications. Students will also study simple refrigeration cycles,
which are essential for refrigeration systems. The unit also includes the study of perfect gas mixtures and the basic principles of psychrometry, with application in air conditioning systems. The concepts of combustion and its energy and environmental implications will be introduced. The aim is to develop the ability to critically and quantitatively analyze different thermal systems. By the end, students should be able to interpret and evaluate the performance of real thermodynamic cycles. The approach combines theory, practical examples, and applied exercises.
Syllabus 1. Steam power cycles.
2. Gas turbine cycles.
3. Simple refrigeration cycles.
4. Mixture of ideal gases.
5. Basics of psychrometry and air conditioning.
6. Combustion.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Teaching methodologies are based on mixed theoretical/practical and practical approaches. There are 2 classes per week with 2 hours each. In one the theoretical concepts are given, followed immediately by practical illustrations. In the practical class, numerical exercises involving application of the theory to concrete thermodynamics engineering problems are solved. In addition, there are two laboratory classes.
Evaluation is either periodic or final. The periodic evaluation is based on: lab works (TL, 17.5%); written test (TE, 75%); and presences in theoretical classes (P, 7.5% (>85%), 5% (>65%) or 2.5 (>50%)). Minimum mark in the test 7 (over 20). Final mark: NF=0.75NTE+0.175NTL+0.075NP.
The final evaluation is based on a written examination (EX). Requires frequency (to deliver the labs work report). The final mark takes into account the lab result: NF=0.175NTL+0.825NEX. Marks above 16 require a final oral examination. Students are allowed to consult book during tests.
