Learning outcomes This course unit aims to deepen students' knowledge of the cells that make up blood, integrating theoretical concepts with an experimental approach and clinical cases.

At the end of this course unit, the student should be able to:
1. Describe and relate biochemical aspects in the process of hematopoiesis.
2. Identify the main alterations that can occur in the process of hematopoiesis.
3. Describe the main phases of normal hematopoiesis of blood cells.
4. Acquire the basic skills for working in an experimental laboratory in the field of hematology.
5. Describe the biological processes that lead to the abnormal development of blood cell populations.
6. Correlate the alterations that occur in hematopoiesis with different clinical situations.
7. Integrate theoretical and practical knowledge in solving problems such as the discussion of clinical cases.
Syllabus 1. Blood and General Hematopoiesis - different types of anemias and their associated pathophysiological characteristics and biochemical aspects

2. Hemoglobin synthesis
3. Thrombopoiesis.
4. Phases of hematopoiesis/erythropoiesis.
5. Granulopoiesis, Monopoiesis and benign alterations in these lineages.
6. Lymphopoiesis - monopoiesis and benign and malignant alterations of the various lineages.
7. Leukemias and lymphomas
8. Hemostasis process: coagulation and fibrinolysis.
9. Transplantation and blood transfusion.
10. Basic laboratory concepts in Hematology.
11. Laboratory methods and techniques applied to the study of Hematopoiesis.
