Learning outcomes |
1. Understand the importance and relevance of philosophy for the ethical, political and critical education of high school students;
2. Differentiate the argumentative and rhetorical contexts in which philosophy operates;
3. Recognize the fundamental role of formal logic in the construction of consistent reasoning and the development of critical awareness
about the use of language in the public and media space;
4. Apply the concepts of valid inference and fallacy in the analysis of arguments, both philosophical and everyday;
5. Use logical and argumentative techniques to communicate a position, support it, defend it and critically evaluate opposing positions.

Syllabus |
1. The importance and role of philosophy in secondary education.
2. The various and heterogeneous questions of philosophy.
3. The argumentative and rhetorical contexts of philosophy. Argumentation and formal logic. Validity-truth distinction. Valid inferences.
Fallacies.
3.1. Argumentation and rhetoric. Argumentative techniques. Argumentation and informal fallacies.
3.2. Argumentation and philosophy. Rhetoric and democracy. Persuasion and manipulation.
4. Argumentation and teaching of philosophy: planning a teaching module.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
Student assessment will be ongoing and will focus on:
1. An annotated reading of a text previously agreed upon with the teacher – a weighting of 30%;
2. A 5-page argumentative analysis exercise to be submitted at the end of the semester – a weighting of 40%;
3. Planning an argumentation teaching module to be presented and proposed for discussion by all in class – a weighting of 30%.
