Learning outcomes |
At the end of the course, the student should be able to: (1) describe central phenomena of thought and language and the theories, models and constructs that support them; (2) integrate and apply knowledge to explain real-life problems by applying explanatory theories of cognition; (3) draw implications for understanding the individual as a whole; (4) communicate clearly, orally and in writing in Portuguese; (5) develop skills in analysing and synthesising documents in Portuguese and foreign languages; (6) develop interpersonal skills through co-operative group work; (7) use laboratory resources whenever possible and the Moodle platform.

Syllabus |
1. Mental representation of knowledge: Mental images, cognitive maps and propositions. 2. Mental organisation of knowledge: Declarative knowledge organisation; Procedural or executive knowledge; Integrative models of declarative and non-declarative knowledge representation. 3. Language: Language comprehension; Reading; Discourse comprehension; Language and thought; Language in a social context. Neuropsychology of language. 4. Problem Solving and Creativity: Types of problems; Obstacles and aids to problem solving; Expertise, knowledge and problem solving; Creativity. 5. Reasoning and Decision Making: Deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning; Neuroscience of reasoning; Decision making.
