Learning outcomes Establish mass and energy balances in processes with and without chemical reaction. Solve combined mass and energy balances in transient regime. Know momentum, heat and mass transport phenomena. Perform calculations of heat and mass transfer in bioprocesses.
At the end of this curricular unit, the student should be able to:
- Design and interpret a flow diagram of an industrial chemical process;
- Perform mass balances in systems with chemical reaction;
- Perform energy balances in processes with phase transition and chemical reaction;
- Carry out combined mass and energy balances with phase transition and chemical reaction, in steady state or batch systems.
- Set up material and energy balances and identify knowns and unknowns in bioprocesses
Syllabus Introduction to mass balances. Systems and processes. Flowsheet. Equilibrium and steady state. Mass balances with recycling, purge and bypass. Stoichiometry of growth and product formation. Balance to the atoms. Balance to the electrons. Yield. Energy balances. Enthalpy changes in processes with and without chemical reaction. Heat of reaction in processes with biomass production. Energy balances in microbial cultures. Energy balances in fermentation processes. Introduction to mass and energy balances in unsteady state.
