Learning outcomes This course, besides to convey to students basic knowledge of inorganic chemistry, aims to teach the properties of ionic and coordenation compounds, how to quantify their formation energies and how to interpret Latimer, Frost, Pourbaix and Ellingham diagrams
Syllabus Introduction to Quantum Chemistry: Shorödinger equation (radial and angular functions).
Properties of the elements of the Periodic Table: effective nuclear charge (Slater rules and Raimondi/Clementi), Electronegativities (Pauling, Mulliken Allred and Rochow).
Ionic compounds: ratio rc/ra and coordination number. Lattice energy: Born-Landé and Kapustinskii equations.
Latimer, Frost, Pourbaix and Ellingham diagrams.
Hydrogen. Hydrides. Oxygen. Oxides. Oxyacids.
Coordination compounds: classical and organometallic complexes. Crystal Field Theory. Octahedral, tetrahedral, tetragonal and square geommetry. Jahn-Teller effect. Stabilization energy of the crystal field. Stability and magnetic properties of the complexes (total spin number). Stability and 18 electrons rule.

Practice – Comparison of the properties of metals of groups I, II and III with those of transition metals. Synthesis of some coordination compounds, their characterization and synthesis yield.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The transmission of the syllabus is fundamentally of an expository nature. However, it is also intended that there is room for asking questions, leading to group dialogue. The practical part consists of carrying out group work: exercises, laboratory experiments and reports. These modalities are associated with the contents of the course and allow the student to take responsibility and socialize.
The student is evaluated through 2 written tests in person if there are conditions theoretical grade (70%), a practical grade (30%) related to laboratory work and group reports and 2 practical tests, with a minimum grade of 10 to both components.
The practical part will have a component of 60% related to laboratories / reports and 40% of practical tests.
