Learning outcomes Provide an introduction to the study of the Contemporary Age, leading the student to the knowledge of some of the main facts and processes that marked the "long" nineteenth century and the "brief" twentieth century world history.

At the end of the Course the student should be able to:
1. Understand the emergence and the framework of the Contemporary Age, especially in what concerns its political aspects.
2. Explain concepts and essential notions to the understanding of Contemporary History.
3. Produce practical written work.
4. Demonstrate oral presentation skills.
5. Assuming informed critical attitudes about the problems addressed in classes.
Syllabus I The “Long” Nineteenth Century: a glance
Revolutions, Liberalism, Democracy, Socialism, Movement of Nationalities and Imperialism.

II The “Brief” Twentieth Century
1. The First World War and the weakening of Europe.
2. Communism and the Soviet Union.
3. The crisis of the liberal democracies.
4. The Fascisms.
5. 1939-1945: the weight of an "even more total war".
6. Cold War and the Soviet Bloc collapse.
7. The decolonization.
8. East Asia: Japan and China.
9. The european building.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Expositive classes; discussion classes; practical work; use of audiovisual resources; use of the moodle platform.

2 written tests (45% + 45% = 90% of the grade). Relevant participation in classes (10% of the grade). Attendance: 50% of classes. Access to exam period: at least 6 points. Special evaluation (TE): according to the ongoing legislation.
