Learning outcomes The objectives are to promote understanding of some of the most representative currents and authors of 20th-century sociology. The course aims to apply various concepts of contemporary sociological theory to specific fields of analysis and to reflect on national sociological production in its relationship with the selected authors. Similarly, the course aims to stimulate students' critical thinking about contemporary societies.
Syllabus 1. Main Contemporary Authors in Sociology - An overview of current thinkers and their contributions.
2. Pierre Bourdieu: Structure. Social Practices.
2.1 Pierre Bourdieu. Field. Habitus.
3. Zygmunt Bauman. Liquid Modernity. Liquid Relations. Consumer Society.
4. Jean Baudrilhard. Hyperreality. Communication. Consumer Society.
5. Jürgen Habermas. Communicative Action. Public Sphere. Democracy.
6. Ulrich Beck. The "Risk Society."
7. Manuel Castells. Network Society. Globalization. Information Technologies in Social and Economic Organization.
8. Bernard Lahire. Debates on Practices in the Context of Dispositional Theories.
9. Margaret Archer. Morphogenetic Theory. Critical Realism.
10. Michel Foucault. Power. Knowledge. Subjectivity.
11. Anthony Giddens. Theory. Micro-macro integration. Action-structure integration. Structuration theory.
12. Saskia Sassen. New dynamics of capitalism. Migration. The role of cities in the world system.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Teaching methodologies.
Lectures are open to debate and critical reflection. Individual reading and guided discussion of required readings are included.
Practical classes will focus on creating a research dossier.
