Learning outcomes Understand and interpret the social issues of social control and deviance, leading students into contact with the way in which sociology has addressed these issues. Successful completion of the course implies that the student is able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of key theoretical and methodological frameworks around social control, social deviance, and crime
2. Elaborate and debate rationally, logically and analytically consistent arguments and support their defense;
3. Demonstrate the ability to design, organize and execute theoretical and empirical works, suitable to their level of training, as well as oral and written communication.
Syllabus Contents
1 - Social control, social deviance, crime: fundamental concepts
2 - Social deviation from a scientific perspective: Main theories (anomia; interactionist approaches; conflict approach; control theory; realistic explanations (right and left).
3 - Sociology of Crime: Approach and problems of crime as an object of sociology
4 - Social control and deviance: topical issues and relevant debates. Feeling of insecurity; the world of young people; alternative lifestyles
