Learning outcomes The aim of this course is to study labour and employment issues in depth, with a particular focus on Portuguese society. Starting with a discussion of the concepts of work and employment, we will study labour markets and their functioning, as well as the evolution of working conditions.

By the end of this unit, students should be able to
- Discuss the differences and links between the concepts of work and employment,
- Understand the specificities of the Portuguese labour market and critically analyse the current situation on this basis;
- Discuss the differences between the main trends in the sociology of work and compare them with labor and employment policies in recent decades;
- Critically analyse the social role of trade unions.

2. Sociology of work as a privileged field of social intervention

3.2 Trade unionism and contemporaneity: new and old questions

4. The employment/unemployment dichotomy and its implications

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment will consist of the following elements:
The teaching-learning assessment includes the following elements:
1) Individual assignment 1: Analysis and presentation of a news item in class
2) Individual assignment 2: Preparation and presentation of a review of one of the resources suggested by the teacher
3) Development, presentation, and discussion of a group assignment (4/5 members)
4) Written knowledge assessment test
The final mark will be the weighted average of the assessment components.
