Learning outcomes This Course aims to give an introduction to the study of general chemistry.
It is intended that the student perceives, develop and apply fundamental knowledge in general chemistry,
namely:
- Use the Periodic Table as a tool in understanding the chemistry of the elements
- Understanding the theories of chemical bonding and determine the geometry of the molecules
- Relate the physical properties of substances with intermolecular forces
- Solve problems with gases, with emphasis on the use of the ideal gas law and Dalton's law
- Classify solids according to the chemical bond and its crystal structure
- Use the crystal field theory to predict the structure and properties of transition metal complexes
- Understand the laws of thermodynamics and its application in chemistry
- Knowing and applying the fundamental concepts of chemical kinetics
Syllabus - Properties of the periodic table elements
- Chemical bonds

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The broadcast of the syllabus is fundamentally expository. However there will be place for the Questioning / Explaining. The use of audio visual techniques helps on teaching and student comprehension. For this purpose is used Moodle e-learning platform.
The student has an active learning by performing individual and group work, including homework, exercises and laboratory skills. These activities are in agreement with the modules contents of the course and allow students to be responsible and sociable.
The knowledge assessment is made by two individual tests 70%.
The ability assessment is made through skills laboratory performance 30%.
