Learning outcomes This course unit aims to teach the basic knowledge to classify the main types of reactions in organic chemistry and its understanding through its mechanism. At the end of the course unit the student should be able to combine the basic knowledge learned in the course unit with an adequate bibliographic support, in order to predict and classify the chemical behavior of compounds belonging to the main functional groups. It aims also to encourage literature research and reading habits, thus stimulating self-learning in order to solve the proposed problems and to develop a seminar about a studied funtional group in Organic Chemistry (OC).
Syllabus Theoretical. 1. Reactions in organic chemistry: main types; reaction mechanisms and the use of curved arrows to their illustration. 2. Saturated carbons: nucleophilic substitution reactions; elimination reactions; radical reactions. 3. Unsaturated carbons: electrophilic addition; conjugated systems; alkenes and alkynes formation. 4. Carbonyl group: nucleophilic addition; conjugated addition substitution. 5. Oxidation-reduction reactions. 6. Electrophilic aromatic substitution. 7. Enols and enolates: reactions and formation. 8. Practical Cases.
Pratical: Diels-Alder reaction (2 laboratory classes); indolin-2,3-dione reduction with NaBH4 and NH2NH2 (Wolff- Kishner reduction): a practical example of micro-waves in organic synthesis (3 laboratory classes); Theoretical-practical: Resolution of problems: arrows in OC; introduction to reaction mechanisms; saturated carbons; unsaturated carbons; carbonyl group; electrophilic aromatic substitution; oxidation and reduction; enols and enolates.
