Learning outcomes To familiarize the students with the main aspects of solids phenomenology: radiation diffraction, mechanical, thermal and electrical behavior, magnetism, superconductivity.
To acquire the basic notions of crystallography.
To identify the shortcomings of classical theories of solid behavior and to understand the application of quantum theory to these problems.
To understand the operation of fundamental semiconductor devices (diode and transistor).
Syllabus 1. Notions of elasticity
2. Crystallography: crystal lattice and motif, types of lattices, notation
3. Radiation diffraction in crystals: Bragg and Laue condition, reciprocal lattice, structure factor
4. Thermal capacity of solids: Dulong and Petit's law, Einstein model, Debye model
5. Electrical conduction: conductors, insulators, semiconductors, band theory
6. Magnetism: diamagnetism, paramagnetism, ferromagnetism
7. Superconductivity
