Learning outcomes The overall objective of the CU is to provide some basic concepts of mechanics and waves.
It is intended to ensure the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge of Physics that enable the application of Classical Mechanics to the study and understanding of physical phenomena inherent to Engineering.
Syllabus Measure (systems of units) and vectors. Kinematics in one, two and three dimensions. Dynamics: Newton's laws. Applications: movement in curved paths, friction. Work and kinetic energy. Potential energy and conservation of mechanical energy. Linear momentum. Particle systems: center of mass. Conservation of linear momentum and collisions. Rotation: moment of a force and moment of inertia. Angular momentum. Gravitation: Kepler's laws and Newton's law of gravitation. Static equilibrium and elasticity: tension and deformation. Fluid statics: pressure, Archimedes' principle. Fluid dynamics: Bernoulli equation, viscous flow (Poiseuille's law). Oscillations: simple harmonic motion, damped and forced oscillations, resonance. Progressive waves. Wave phenomena. Superposition of waves and standing waves.
