Learning outcomes This course aims to enable students with the set of skills/knowledge required for the use of non-specialized (Microsoft Excel) and specialized
software (IBM SPSS Statistics) into the statistical analysis of experimental data collected in the context of Chemistry, namely:
- Identify, minimize and quantify the sources of error in analytical determinations with the goal to increase reliability;
- plan, deliver and treat the results of analytical determinations based on calibration curves or by standard addition method;
- organize and resume experimental data in tables and graphics;
- ability to support conclusions and technical reports on the statistical analysis of experimental data collected.
Syllabus 1. Fundamentals of Statistics
Nature and context of analytical problems
Identification and classification of statistical variables
Population vs Sample and Statistic and Parameter
Descriptive Statistics

Mean and median tests of two independent samples
Mean and median tests of two paired samples
ANOVA (Mean and median tests of three or more independent samples)
Mean and median tests of three or more paired samples
3. Calibration and Regression
Calibration curves in instrumental analysis
Unweighted and weighted Linear regression
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Classes are fundamentally of a theoretical-practical nature, with exposition of the main contents by the teacher and with practical sheets of application and consolidation of the contents presented. It is intended to create a participatory and motivational teaching-learning process, frequently using multimedia elements and computer programs (Excel and SPSS) to organize experimental data, using tables and graphs, and perform statistical analysis. The Assessment will include the completion of worksheets, where students demonstrate the ability to solve problems/practical questions of the syllabus and also written tests.
