Curso Avançado em Resistência a Antimicrobianos

Código 16888
Ano 1
Semestre S2
Créditos ECTS 5
Carga Horária TP(40H)
Área Científica BIOMEDICINA/BIOQUÍMICA/MEDICINA/CIÊNCIAS FARMACÊUTICAS
Learning outcomes The Curricular Unit allows students to acquire an overview of antimicrobial resistance and its spread, as well as to identify innovative approaches in this area. Thus, students should acquire the following knowledge/skills:
I) To describe the concepts associated with mechanisms of action and antibiotic resistance;
II) To describe and discuss parameters associated with the evolution of resistance;
III) To describe the genetic mechanisms for the spread of resistance;
IV) To discuss the “One Health” perspective in antimicrobial resistance, as an approach that recognizes the link between Human and animal health and the link with the shared environment;
V) To present skills in the assessment of antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance mechanisms, based on phenotypic and advanced molecular technologies;
VI) To understand the process associated with the development of new antimicrobial compounds
Syllabus I) Basic concepts in antibiotics and antibiotic resistance
II) Evolution of resistance and genetic mechanisms for its spread
III) The “One Health” perspective on antimicrobial resistance
IV) Antimicrobial susceptibility tests and resistance mechanisms
V) Whole genome sequencing in the molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance
VI) Alternative strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment will be carried out through a written test (70%) and the preparation of a monograph considering the global application of advanced molecular methodology for evaluating the resistance of infectious agents among those classified as ESKAPE (30%). The grade for the test and the monograph must be equal to or greater than 9.5 points, on a scale of zero to twenty points (0-20), for approval in the Curricular Unit. The minimum grade for access to the exam is 6 points, as a weighted average of the test and monograph.

Classes have 80% mandatory attendance. Justification for absences is made by presenting a medical certificate or other documentation with recognized validity to the head of the curricular unit.

Students who have not reached the minimum grades during the teaching-learning period will be referred to a regular exam and resit, at the times scheduled for this purpose, where they may take the components whose grade was lower than 9.5 points.
