You are warmly invited to walk, talk, and to be a participant in a workshop/walk-shop on how forms of mobility intersect over time. As part of this we hope to make a very short film possibly called ‘The Time Machine’. This event will be held in the Pennines - or more specifically - on the hills, roads, and tow paths that surround Hebden Bridge.
This two day event is part of the Forge network and is an outcome of the 2012 summer school which began to expand, extend, and critique how notions of time are reproduced through forms of mobility. In order to continue these discussions with others and consider how forms of mobility have intersected over time; participants will walk and talk about particular conceptualizations of time in relation to current and past innovations in transport studies (e.g. notions of ‘high-speed’ rail and ‘slow modes’).
We will begin the walk-shop by meeting at
Hebden Bridge Hostel 'Mama Wierdigans' at 10:00, and by drinking hot beverages. We’ll then go for a 5 mile walk while talking about canals, roman and concrete roads, and railways. We have invited a number of local historians to accompany us. In the meantime we’ll invent short dialogues between transport planners, policy makers, and other characters we meet along the way. After a day’s walking and talking, we’ll head back to the hostel for a vegetarian feast and enjoy the delights of Hebden Bridge.
Day 2 will involve a trip to the Hebden Bridge Local History Society Library and the newly formed Pennine Horizons Digital Archive. Here we will build on debates and insights from the first day and focus on producing a short film. This production – featuring characters and ideas created while talking and walking - might, for example, explore ways in which infrastructures and meanings of time have co-evolved, identify common themes that could inform future decision-making, and consider ways in which forms of mobility reproduce concepts of time. A reading pack will be sent to you before the event.
Free accommodation is provided on the 5th September at the Hebden Bridge Hostel and your food will also be provided throughout the event. A small contribution towards travel expenses can also be provided. Sensible and comfortable footwear is necessary and walking boots would be ideal, though not required. If you have a disability and are unsure whether you would be able to attend then please contact us with any questions you have.
Interested in attending?
There are limited places for this walk-shop so please apply now. Places are restricted to PhD students and early career researchers.
