Anúncio: A Research Technician Fellowship (BI) is now available within the project “IND_CHANGE – Ferramentas de modelação baseadas em indicadores para prever alterações na paisagem e promover a aplicação de investigação sócio-ecológica na gestão adaptativa do território” at ICETA-Instituto de Ciências e Tecnologias Agrárias e Agro-Alimentares (PTDC/AAG-MAA/4539/2012 – FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-027863), financed by national funds by FCT / and co-financed by Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER) throughout COMPETE – Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade (POFC).

Requisitos de admissão/Admission requirements: Candidates will be admitted to the competition when demonstrating: (i) a M.Sc. title in Biological, Environmental, Mathematical or Computer Sciences; (ii) practical experience in ecological or environmental data analysis and modelling; (iii) practical experience in the use of GIS and spatial analysis tools; and (iv) autonomy, accountability, oral and written communication capacities in a scientific context.
Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in: (i) data management and database development; (ii) sampling design and statistical inference; (iii) analysis and modelling of biodiversity data; and (iv) Research and Development (R&D) projects involving ecological and environmental assessment.
Plano de trabalhos/Work plan:
The successful candidate will support project tasks related to the collection, management and analysis of biodiversity data at regional and local scales, using advanced methods, tools and computational environments. Such tasks will include: (1) the identification, collection and management of pre-existing biodiversity data; (2) the analysis of the fitness of those data to inform on key biodiversity indicators; (3) the development of regional analyses of biodiversity patterns; (4) the design and implementation of a statistical sampling strategy for the local collection of in-field biodiversity data; and (5) the analysis and modelling on new in-field data for estimation of biodiversity indicators. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate in writing technical reports and scientific publications, as well as to explore novel approaches and tools related to biodiversity modelling.

Local de trabalho/Workplace:
The work will be carried out at CIBIO - Research Centre for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, under the scientific supervision of Prof. João Pradinho Honrado.
Duração da bolsa/Grant duration:
The grant will be awarded for a period of 6 months, due to start in November 08, 2013. The grant contract may be renewed up to a maximum duration of 18 months. Further extended collaboration will be considered for candidates interested in pursuing research and academic training at the level of PhD.
Valor do subsídio de manutenção mensal/Value of monthly maintenance allowance:
Monthly allowance will be 980 euros, according to the grant regulations of FCT in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).
Métodos de selecção/Selection methods:
The ranking of candidates will be performed by a global evaluation based on the CV (40%), the previous experience of the applicant relevant to the project and work-plan (50%), and the motivation of the applicant (10%). Applications should include a CV, preferably accompanied by a motivation letter and copies of all relevant academic certificates. All documents should be submitted in English. The jury may not award the scholarship if the quality of candidates is lower than desired.
